Dispatches: Home sweet home - Tuesday, 18th May 2004

Well, it wasn't just unusually warm in the high arctic. Ottawa was glorious. The welcome, the weather, the people, the tulips. I had a manic day of interviews with the Canadian press on Sunday (that's me on the front page of Monday's Ottawa Citizen!) and flew back to Heathrow overnight. A few more manic interviews today, a bit of time spent in a traffic jam and suddenly I'm sitting here at my computer back in London. In some ways it feels like I've never been away; in others I feel like I've just dropped in from the planet Zarg.

London seems really grimy - I never remembered it this way. The constant drone of the city is almost unbearable - the crawling traffic, the antique buses belching black smoke, the trains, the sirens, the car alarms, a million noisy conversations in a few square miles. There's dust everywhere. It's unbearably warm. My senses are amplified - it's like watching a tv that needs the brightness, contrast, colour and volume turning down.

In many ways I've come back to a life that has been put on hold. The same piles of paper on my desk, emails waiting to be answered, meetings to arrange, a fast filling diary. I'd forgotten how much stuff I own and I'd definitely forgotten just how much paperwork this expedition has generated. My filing cabinet is bursting, folders are bulging, trays are overflowing and barely a few square inches of desk are showing under the mess. Bags of clothing and equipment are piled on the floor, many full of stinking expedition kit that I can hardly bring myself to open. Especially in this heat.

I feel like I've come back to an overgrown garden that needs weeding, yet the last thing I want to do is put on my gardening gloves.

Of course, like a day on the ice, it's not all bad. Valeria's sister Tete and her boyfriend Pablo are here and Tete's cooking a celebratory spanish omelete (tortilla espanola) as I type. Que bien!

It might surprise you to know that I'm missing the ice already. Terribly. If I could be instantly transported back to my tent on the pack ice, would I do it? It's a tough one, and I'll let you know after the tortilla, a beer, a bubble bath and the first night back in my bed for a quarter of a year...

# Greetings from the Children of Unicorn School in Kew

We are really pleased that you have arrived back safely in England. We heard about your adventure in Assembly when our new Headmistress showed us some photographs downloaded from your part of the website. You have tremendous courage and we hope that you will visit us as we have many questions to ask you. Could you please bring your drysuit, mask, gun and rations sample with you. We would find it very exciting to meet you. Best wishes from all the pupils at Unicorn School.

... every day, and miss them, but I'm glad you made it home safely. Maybe, after a while, you can post a postscript and let us know how you are doing. Thanks, again, for taking us along on your journey. I've learned quite a bit from it. Look forward to reading your book. You are going to write a book, arent you? :)

# The touque (winter hat) is being made!

Hey Ben,
I crave the high arctic just like you do- only on a much smaller scale because I spent less time, and had 3 people to share it with. On one of the first nights back I spent an evening just looking at the stars- it's unreal how much you miss while in seclusion from the rest of the world. However when you return it's still unreal how much you miss the solitude that the high arctic has to offer. I hope that you have been able to settle back into the 'grind' of everyday life without much stress. Your First Air Hardcore Canadian Neighbour - Lisa Scotch

# Congrats Ben

Like many other entries I will miss your communications from the North. Also going through a type of withdrawal. Should you visit the States please let us know. Will keep checking your site to see how we can keep up with what's happening with you. Ahhh... a night back in your own bed. I thank God for how He has answered our prayers for you every day. Yes, many of us were serious about our commitment to pray for you Ben. So glad you're home safe. Hope nothing is growing in your Arctic sack. Again a big thanks to Serco for helping make your trip possible. Best Wishes vic young

# Is there anybody out there?

Anyone else still logging out out of habit/desire to still find out what happens to a polar adventurer when he gets home? (post Tortilla and beer).
How is he finding walking down Putney High street? What creatures does he see on the way? How does he cross the Thames? How many drunks has he had to climb over? How are his flip-flops holding out in the heat?
how about an Air Guitar photo in front of Buckingham Palace for us?
I'm in need of a fix!!

# savouring the summit

ben,
ive been a silent follower since the begining. ive tryed to absorb your challenges, realize your creativity, find the lessons and learn from them... i am still internalizing.
after reading your comments about being back at home, i am reminded of a profound moment i had once, when a man i was working with said, "imagine where you were when you were at a place in your life where you felt you were at your best, at the summit of your own mountain, and all that had brought you there. that moment is what you want to forever savour. to return to that place again and again, in your mind" and for me, keeping that special place in my mind, helps me get through just about any sort of grim looking situation, when all you want to do is go back to your summit.
just a thought.
thanks so much for the inspiration & the laughs.
PEACE,
Bethy

# SPECIAL BLOOD TYPE

For those of us with type-ICE blood, polar withdrawal is a very real phenomenon. I returned from the Arctic in late April, and am still guilty of DUII (Driving Under the Influence of Ice). Home is nice in many ways, but I do share your sadness for having left behind such a pristine perfect world. I, like you, find myself wishing I could snap my fingers and return. Teleportation anyone? Where are those Star Trek boys when you really need them?!?!?

So, how long before the itch to go back becomes unbearable? I give thee weeks... Call me when you're ready.

Now, about that boot................

Polar hugs,
Moki

Many in your fanclub prayed for your safety and success. Our prayers were answered and, for that, I am truly thankful.

# Where Are You Ben? I can't smell you anymore!

Ben,
I am so lonely.
I have completely lost your scent now.

The last time I came across one of your yellow markings in the snow I rolled around it.
I just wanted to smell like you.

I have come to the end of your trail.
It kind of looks like shovel marks in the snow.
You didn’t have a shovel did you?
Hello...I said ...was that a shovel in your pants? I thought you were just glad to see me.

Please tell me you didn’t have me following you around this fish-forsaken wasteland with a shovel behind your back!

And to think...I was worried about the ski pole?

# You have the knowledge and the experience. . .

Ben:

You have the knowledge and the experience to accomplish most anything. You are the one that builds bridges to impossible dreams and others learn from you. Without you realizing it, you will shape the future and influence others to the highest good.

I am so glad to have known of you and I do hope there will be a way to keep in touch with your future adventures.

Many good wishes for a healthy and happy future!

# Media Star

I sat listening to 'In Our Time' on BBC Radio 4 today alongside a very proud Mum. She says you had your Radio voice on?

Anyone who wants to hear some of the story for themselves should log on to WWW.bbc.co.uk and head for the radio 4 section to 'listen again' to todays show.

Has anyone noticed any changes in you since you achieved this great goal in your life?

# CONGRATS AND WELCOME HOME!

Even though it's a bit overwhelming to come back to ALL THAT (sheesh!), I'm sure you're overjoyed at seeing family and friends and fabulous Valeria!! ;-) You must've missed each other tremendously! I'm so happy for you!

Happy for you, yet sad that this journey is over...I wish there was more publicity around what you've done here in the states...I couldn't even find one iota of information about Wave. I'll have to check out that Ottawa article...

You've demonstrated the utmost of physical and mental strength and endurance, determination and perseverance...I strongly admire that and it inspires me in so many ways. No frostbite, no issues you couldn't conquer...you have to be proud and ecstatic at the way it all turned out!! I can't thank you and your team enough for bringing me along on your expedition...thank you thank you THANK YOU!

I look forward to your book and anything else you publish about your expedition and hopefully someday meeting you! I'm eager to find out what is next on your life's "to do" list!

Many heartfelt congratulations and I'm so happy you're home and healthy!

I'll still be checking in, of course... :-D

Big High-Fives!

# You can take the boy out of the arctic- but - -

Ben sitting behind a desk, surrounded by paperwork, filing cabinets and a computer? I can't picture it. To think that just over a week ago you were crossing the north pole. Congratulations on all that you accomplished during your expedition. Despite horrendous ice conditions, the forces of nature working against you seemingly every day, and equipment that challenged your will and creativity, you made it to the Pole, and made a few friends along the way through your ability to share your thoughts about your journey. Thanks again for giving us such vivid descriptions of what you were going through up there. It definitely had an impact on so many people who posted their comments here each day. I'll miss following your daily postings, but it sounds like you could use a little less intrusion in your life right now as you acclimate back into life in the big city. Is there any way to stay in contact with you and learn about your future plans? I am sure that no day is typical for you compared to the rest of us. I would also be curious to know, after you have had some time to reflect, on what you might have done differently had the conditions been more favorable.
All the best to you-

# Welcome back

...do u need a find a quieter home in among green fields if not ice fields?
Have you thought yet about your ecological experiences, this is Scouts 'Go for Green' year, check out www.scoutbase.org.uk, you could help save the ice for other explorers.
Take care and hope you get north sometime, love Jane and the northern clan

I'm glad that you're home safe and sound! I'm also glad that you let us know how being back feels. I know that it must be a "mixed bag." I love nature and quietness, too. # You're back!

Hi Ben -

I'm so glad to hear from you - I'd gotten quite used to following your daily dispatches and am so pleased that you're letting us all know how things are.

It's amazing to read about your amplified senses; I wondered what returning to the chaos would be like.

Hope you enjoy your meal and celebration with your family and friends - cheers to you, Ben!

# Welcome Home Ben

Great to finally hear from you. We've missed "seeing" you on this board. That's such a great photo on the FRONT PAGE of the Ottawa newspaper. I found it yesterday and printed a copy for posterity.

I can empathize with how you must feel. Not that I've been to the Arctic and back but I love peace and pristine nature and hate noise and grime. When I returned to CT after a 10,000 mile road trip, by myself, it was such an adjustment, especially after being gone from CT and the frantic east coast for four years. So much traffic and rudeness - I long for the open road again.

Not everything has to be organized today, but I'm sure you know that, or even tomorrow. Decompress for a few days and bask in seeing your friends and family. I'm sure they're all so happy to have you home.

Enjoy your Mexican dinner - mui bueno!

By Gwen on Tuesday, 18 May - 10:35 pm -0700

# What's Next Ben?

So then, what are your plans for the next big one? :-)

Make sure you get yourself to PF, there are a lot of people who want to buy you a drink :-)

Glad you are back safe and well, and again, CONGRATULATIONS.

And yesterday I had some bird called Bosoms who claimed she walked through London in the middle of the night wearing nothing on top but her bra!! And all for charity!
I dunno. What's goin on in this world hey? I go home, watch Eastenders, down the boozer for a couple and then home to the missus. And I'm happy!!

All I can say is WELCOME BACK Ben. Enjoy your first night back.
