First of all, it's Tony's birthday - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Tony first emailed me, completely out of the blue, just over a year ago. At the time I mistakenly assumed he was a potential sponsor - when it turned out he didn't have any money we lost touch for a while, before finally meeting for a curry in Putney. I don't think either of us imagined so much would happen in the few short months that followed, but Tony ended up leaving his job to work full-time on this expedition. His input and support have been key - I honestly doubt I'd be here now without him and he has worked wonders in keeping this project on track despite my, and the Arctic's best attempts to mess everything up. Good job, sir!

It felt like my birthday today as well - blue skies and blazing sunshine as soon as I woke up. The ice was REALLY bad for the first two hours (see pic - old, thick pack ice, huge ridges and deep snow) and then flattened out beautifully. I had some great pans this afternoon, hence the mileage (2nd highest of the expedition). To top it all off, I started drifting north last night (nearly a mile) and it hasn't stopped yet. Excellent!

I'm camped at 89'52.3", which leaves 7.7 nautical miles (14.2 km) to the Pole. At this rate, that's half a day's skiing... Watch this space!

Today is dedicated to Tony Haile - birthday boy & expedition manager extraordinaire. Thanks Tony.

# Blow the wind southerly

When you get to the pole, how are you going to describe the wind directioin as all wind will be from the south? will an easterly be from your left when you're facing down the zero degree longitude line?, westerly from your right? etc.

Stay safe

# Ready, Steady, SKI !!!

Ben, well done on your progress so far. The weather has been shocking here but compared to where you are what are we complaining about ?. Ted's got some PH flags on order so it would have been great for you to hoist one of those when you reach the pole. You are an inspiration to us all.
You are more than welcome to come to one of our Surrey curry nights on your return.
Keep safe.

# Keep On On

Hi Ben,

Well a short note today, as enough has already been said, Happy Birthday Tony, and WELL DONE BEN.

I have a special day tommorrow, however not as special as yours, my drink is on ice, but I have to go and buy some (ice that is), have another GREAT day, best wishes and prayers for you all, what a team.

By Peter Goddard on Tuesday, 11 May - 08:59 am -0700

# Pole Position

Here's hoping you have a clear run through to the pole today. Like so many of us, I've been watching your progress daily and always great to hear your musings. Is it too early to ask how you'll celebrate when you get to the Pole? I guess you don't get much time there as drift alone will mean it's difficult to stay in place, but no doubt a quick phone call, an energy bar and on with progress to Canada... go Ben, go! Have a speedy homeward leg.

PS Tan lines and beard look great!!!

Hi, Ben
A Happy Birthday to Tony from California's central coast or, the coast with the most, our fantastic West Coast. Wishing you all the best, that many more follow, and success follows each step throughout your lifetime. Likewise, thank you for your amazing logistically contribution, to Ben's quest! Our gallant explorer is so near the pole, that his blinking red light, now overwhelms the target! All the best, to each and everyone, who has made thus far, everything possible. # HAPPY BIRTHDAY TONY!

What a great birthday message, Ben. Not only a lovely tribute to our son, but the second best day's travel. We are delighted that Tony has had such a chance to be part of your expedition. Little did we think when you and Tony went training in Norway last November that all this would happen! Thank you SERCO!

We are currently relaxing in the Canaries but have been checking the site twice daily to make sure we keep up with your progress and link in with all those who post the messages of support.

We are flying home tomorrow and the first thing we shall do when we get home is check that you have reached the Pole. Even before we have a cup of tea! !You have done magnificently to have got there despite all the problems with bureaucracy and the weather. Now just slide as far as the Ice will let you towards Canada.

Our thoughts are always with you

Jonathan

# I'm speechless!

THIS IS SO EXCITING I JUST HAVE TO SCREEAAAAAM!!! First things first...HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE BIRTHDAY BOY!! Tony, you sound like a regular "boy wonder" and you've obviously done a whole lot right if your boy is still out there plodding along, half a day to the pole, with great spirits, unmatched positive attitude and all the drive in the world! Kudos!

Ben, I can't even stand it...the excitement...really! You're doing such a great job and have great stamina to withstand the elements both mentally and physically! I knew you had to have something when you started all this, but now I'm just beside myself at the thought that you'll be crossing the pole in no time! The red dot is practically ON TOP of the blue one in the middle of the map!

May you have restful sleep and perfect day for the Pole tomorrow!

Nikki ;-)

Hope that tomorrow goes well, and that it is easier going on the way to Canada!I assume you will use your sledge to slide all the way back down to Canada?

By George on Monday, 10 May - 05:45 pm -0700

# Wow, wow, wow

What a great dispatch! You're so close to the Pole, and I am so excited, I can't stand it! Beautiful photo too, despite the ice and snow (after all, what can one expect at the Pole!). Great mileage - you will soon be literally on top of the world. How fantastic.

A great, big Happy Birthday to Tony!! We all know what an integral part of Ben's expedition you have been. Thank you for all the updates with which you have provided us, and all posted with that wonderful sense of humor that seems to be prevalent with everyone involved. Great bunch of people. All the best to you, Tony.

Really looking forward to your next dispatch, Ben!!

By Gwen on Monday, 10 May - 05:33 pm -0700

# Happy Birthday Mr T!

Best wishes Tony! Great job indeed.

And Ben - thanks for yesterday's dedication. You continue to inspire and entertain us more each day - you have to let me in on your secret and recipe for unmatcheable determination and perpetual wit on you return.

Looking forward to seeing that now famous little red dot blinking over Canada some day soon... keep at it!
