1) Decent ice, a few flat pans and no open water.

2) The knowledge that I've skied 379 nautical miles (700km) so far.

3) Blue skies and sunshine, 24 hours a day.

4) My sledge didn't try to run me over today.

5) The fact that I'm now 'inside' 88 degrees north - less than two degrees (120 nautical miles) to the Pole.

6) Sun block - the stuff I put on my lips has a mouth-wateringly delicious coconut smell. I don't know how I've avoided eating it...

7) Polyphonic Spree - 'Reach for the Sun'.

8) I've found out where the brown stains are coming from. The what?! Well, I was reluctant to discuss this before, but I've been finding huge brown stains on my trousers recently. It turns out there was a fugitive chocolate bar hiding in my sleeping bag. Naturally I ate it, once I'd cleaned the fluff off.

9) My beard. It cracks me up every time I catch a glimpse of it (reflected in the screen of my iPAQ, for example). It's huge. Hilariously big. I feel like some crazy old fisherman, and I'm going to start losing things in it if I'm not careful.

10) The photo you've all been waiting for. Can anyone name that tune?

Today is dedicated to Neil Sewell - I hope life is treating you well, mate ('We are the pilgrims master, we shall go...')

# IRON MAIDEN- Stranger in a strange land

No doubt, the chorus goes: 'Stranger in a strange land, land of ice and snow...' Or maybe 'The lonlyness of a long distance runner'?? Well, I hope that the contact you have with people from all over the world makes you feel a bit less lonly. Rock on!!

# Cool bananas

Hello
My name is Monty, I am 11. I live in south eastern Australia. I love skiing and I think you are doing a great thing. It must be cool to have 24 hours of daylight. Goodluck! Now I've found the blog I'll keep looking to see how you are going. Do you ever get scared? I like the picture - and your cool beard.

# walk this way!

... even though with the beard you may better be one of ZZTop on the top of the Pole! Cool Pic!

By Iria on Sunday, 2 May - 03:12 am -0700

# Laughter, what's better?

Thank you so much for the dispatch today, you are in fine form and the picture is totally radical. As I was reading your List, I burst out laughing at point number 4, (not being run over by the sledge). "Beautiful Day" by U2 would be my guess as well. All the best and tonight I will be raising a few to toast your safe journey and continuous good fortune. Cheers Ben.

# Lake District...

Going away for a few days, so you keep safe and keep on playing! Have put your photo on my computer so I can show off 'my cousin's lad' when I'm back in college next week.
Take care Ben

# "I'm Sitting (nearly) On Top Of The World".............

............would be my guess for a tune title, Ben.
You've had a great day, sent a terrific photo, and written an uplifting inspiring mesaage. A few more "little miracles", eh, what!
Here's sometihing I've been thinking about: has anyone ever taken a panoramic photo (or series of photos) at the North Pole? Something you might want to try! Something I'd really love to see!!!
Again, Ben, prayers for your safety and good weather from southwestern Ontario, Canada.

# Name that tune?

"I am Sitting on Top of the World"?

By Calvin Clift on Saturday, 1 May - 09:13 pm -0700

# I love it!

What a fantastic photo! :) Just when I think you can't possibly amaze me anymore, there you go again! Put a big smile on my face when I saw you, kinda lookin' like Chuck Berry, if you know who he is.

It's wonderful that you had such a great day and are so cheerful. You always make my day when you've had a good one.

You'll have to have an Extreme Makeover when you finish your trip to get rid of that beard. Be sure you have a before and after photo taken.

Keep that music in your soul and rock on, Ben!

By Gwen on Saturday, 1 May - 09:09 pm -0700

# Rockin' all over the world

Hey Ben, although I'm pretty certain you haven't included it on your mp3 player you have to be 'Rocking all over the world' with the mighty Quo, as The Carpenter's, 'I'm on the top of the world', doesn't lend itself nearly so well to air guitar....

Bon chance,
Stay safe,

John

By John Newman on Saturday, 1 May - 08:36 pm -0700

# Name that tune....

Is it "there is no one quite like Grandma?"

By Bonzo on Saturday, 1 May - 08:11 pm -0700

# Join the Band-www.jamesdalymusic.com

Excellent photo, obviously more talent than anyone could ever imagine!!!
You have an honorary place in my band based on style points alone...
I will guess the song is NOT, "Should I stay, or should I go"...hehe...
Good to see you rockin out, and congratulations on a fine journey so far...
Continued Best wishes, and always a prayer for your safety....
Rock on, and peace, from Sunny Florida, where its a HUMID 88 Degrees Fahrenheit as I write this....Best Regards... James Daly

# AC DC Shook me all night long

Ben that picture is right on. Love it!! The arctic will never be the same. Rock on Ben! Better watch you don't play too much of that hot air guitar. Don't want the ice to melt. As Neill Young would say "Keep on Rocking in the free world" . Hey maybe that was the song you were playing air guitar to. "Born to be Wild" another great tune. "Smoke on the water" another possible tune. Ben this has got to be a first!! The first solo air guitar picture in the arctic. It deserves to go into the record books!! Rock on!!

# Aerosmith - Sweet Emotion

Air Greetings Jedi,
Dude! Most ultimate, stellar, right on photograph ever shot from the Arctic. You have achieved bonus-points that blew out the bank in Las Vegas. I felt, Aerosmith's Sweet Emotion, from Toys in the Attic, as your off-the-planet air guitar demonstration, evoked sweet emotion here in SLOtown. Ben, absolutely far out, most astonishingly cool, and smashingly fantastic air guitar! Put your photograph on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, bro.
Bravo,
-Scot

# All the way to Canada!

Wonderful! Congrats!
It had to happen soon!
Ride On, way into the morrow and all the way to Canada!

May the Force be with you!

# Mmmmmmm Chocolate...

...Even if it has been melted/fluffed/hardened again. I imagine its about as satisfying as finding a tenner in your wallet or a pocket that you never realised you had :-)

Brilliant picture btw Ben

Glad you are having/had a good day. Lets hope it carries on being just as good. I'm going to have a bottle of fizz tonight, and toast to your good day.

By Lisa (Mrs Fish) on Saturday, 1 May - 06:31 pm -0700

# by the way...

I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for that book/speaking tour we're all hoping you'll do. I've gotta get this photo an autograph!! :-D

# RIGHT ON, MY MAN!!!!!

I'm about to hit the trails with my dog for my weekend workout and I decided I could use some fresh inspiration to get the juices flowing. When I opened the site to find this shot of you kickin' it on the air guitar, it gave me a huge belly laugh and I shouted out loud: "Ha Haaaaaaaaaaa!!! Right ON, my man!!!" Dude, this is EXCELLENT!! And I must say the sky and snow is just absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! Ben, you are so lucky to have this opportunity and I'm so excited and happy for you and I don't even know you!! Wonderful dispatch today and congrats on crossing the 88th!!!!! You're doing a kick arse job and your spirits and attitude is unmatched! You seem very strong and healthy and today's dispatch is fabulously entertaining and it gives me a great feeling! I would've been a little perplexed myself at spotting such brown tracks in the trousers...at least they led you to a stray treat (even though it had a bit of fluff on it!) And let me see if I can name that tune...hmmm....well, how about U2's "Beautiful Day"! All the very best to you Ben and thank you once again for giving me the inspiration to work towards my expedition, sharing your life in this journey, and being such a great sport in sharing so many interesting and fun pictures! Catch you tomorrow!

big fat smile,

Nikki

L'Enfer du Nord

L'Enfer du Nord - Thursday, 29th April 2004

'L'Enfer du Nord' - 'the Hell of the North' is the nickname for perhaps the world's toughest one day bike race - the infamous Paris-Roubaix. Part of the reason I'm telling you this is that a British rider, Roger Hammond came third this year - the ...read more

Crash landing

Crash landing - Friday, 30th April 2004

There is a degree of contention in the polar world over which route to the Pole is toughest - from Canada or from Russia. Some argue that the Russian route (despite being 100 miles further) is 'easier' because the drift is 'mostly north' and the ice ...read more

Into the mist... - Monday, 3rd May 2004

Today wasn't much fun at all and at times I came perilously close to a severe sense of humour failure. It snowed heavily during the night. 'Oh well', I thought, as I trudged through the fresh snow, 'at least the ice is pretty good'. Ten minutes ...read more
