A shorter update tonight as I need to repair the tip of one of my skis (nothing serious, don't panic!)

More of the same today - a cold, cold wind from the east, some stupendously bad pack ice and that 'hit me with your rhythm stick' song stuck in my head, none of which were easy to deal with...

On a different note, despite my slightly ambiguous message yesterday, no, my mum's not getting married just yet!

Today is dedicated to the Norwegian adventurer Borge Ousland. He's skied from the Russian side twice now and his expertise is unrivaled. I called him this evening, after I'd got the tent up and his advice and support cheered me up immensely. Thanks Borge!

# Keep up the good work

Hello I would Like to let you know we are learning all about you. We are having our students research, all that you are doing. We are all supporting your Mission... P.S. 238 Brooklyn NY

By Shari on Thursday, 1 April - 04:15 pm -0800

# Message of Support

I am stuck in an Office at Risley. With a slight head cold. But it is nothing to what you are trying to do. We in the Serco Assurance Office are willing you on and West Indies are 17 for 1 against England. Keep going I am sure you can do it.

# catagorise your attempt

Ben,

I think to be out in the polar environment for even one day is amazing and for that I respect what you are doing and wish you all the success in your expedition...my question is, and I mean this supportively, what do you define as success now? Do you still consider the record attempt legitimate or are you now attempting lesser (if that is a fair word) targets? Either way..good luck

# Scottish Weather

Hi Ben

Sounds as if you are experiencing more than Scottish weather and I know how bad that gets.

Keep your chin up and maybe we could (Serco Dounreay Thurso) take you out for a wee dram some day.

Everybody here is spurring you on

Good Luck

PS: Try one of the Beatles songs to keep in your head, it might keep you sane

By Anne on Thursday, 1 April - 03:28 pm -0800

# Go for it!

Keep it up Ben - there are loads of us following your progress and willing you on...
And remember, however bad it seems, mending ski tips in the frozen north just has to be better than working in an office!

By Chris Anderson on Thursday, 1 April - 03:09 pm -0800

# Hang in there Ben!

Keep up the fantastic job, Ben. The first thing I do when I swittch on my computer each morning is check on your progress.

By Brian Higginson on Thursday, 1 April - 03:04 pm -0800

# Enjoy

I don`t like the snow and the cold but I know you love it and I hope that youĞre enjoying a lot this time. You will remember these travels forever so open your eyes all as you can. We are encouraging you in silence from our homes all days.

# PS "Sun Dog"

Your photo looks almost like a perfect "sun dog" The kiddies in the schools following your website might be interested in finding out what a sun dog is and can do so by putting "Sun Dog" into a google search.

By Babs Powell on Thursday, 1 April - 11:30 am -0800

# WoW!

What a picture, I am going to make it my screen saver.

# Brilliant work

Ben,
My staff are following your brilliant efforts, and can only say that we are so proud that Serco is suppoorting your efforts. It takes a great effort for us to even go to the gym, so you efforst are veiwed as simply brilliant.

Keep up the good work

By Roger Reed on Thursday, 1 April - 10:55 am -0800

# Hit me with your rhythm stick

Hit me slowly, hit me quick.

How appropiate you should be humming along to the Ian Drury and the blockheads song about self inflicted pain. :-D

Sounds like your mood has taken a turn for the better and that you are a bit more optimistic than e few day ago.

Keep up the spirit.

By Brian Nielsen on Thursday, 1 April - 07:54 am -0800

# Songs that stuck in heads

In my humble opinion, the best way to get rid of songs stuck in your head, is to actually play that very song two or three times. Your brain gets what it craves for and leaves you alone for a while.

Have a nice day!

By Ini on Thursday, 1 April - 07:49 am -0800

# You are doing great Ben

You are doing great Ben. You are getting mileage behind you and keeping everything in working order, even though it is a challenge. You will be able to lead others when they have challenges.

You will make it work--stay with the "Force."
You make a positive difference!

Sincerely,
Q: What kind of coffee were they serving when the Titanic hit an iceberg?
A: Sanka!

# Glorious Photograph

Hi, Ben
My first reaction, when viewing this specific photograph among your collection of Arctic tributes, was astonishment! This one captures, a surreal feel of our planet, evoking a mystical quality, as zen is now. Solid vibes on that ski-tip repair. Keep on, keeping on...
Best,

# Posted your website address on my Blog

You can access it at www.livejournal.com/users/drainbamaged/ I told everyone that reads my stories to come here and read about you, and to post words of encouragement.

Maybe some of the stories will make you laugh and help keep you going.

Keep gutting it out. Like I said you are inspirational to many, many people.

I'll bid on the boot if you put it up for auction. I'd donate it to the Smithsonian in Washington DC if I won.

Love the pics. Keep up the good work.

# Beautiful photo

As they all are. It's so interesting to see what it looks like in the Arctic. Your photos don't show those pressure ridges you talk about but I suppose you try and find a flat spot to pitch your tent. If today was much the same as yesterday, that's not so bad. At least you were able to travel.

Haven't heard about the shoe for a couple of days. No news is good news, I hope!

My thoughts are about you throughout the day. Stay safe and travel well.

By Gwen on Thursday, 1 April - 01:20 am -0800

# Catching up?

It has sounded like you're probably behind schedule but you've had a couple good days in the last week. Are you optimistic about catching up with where you had hoped to be by now? Why do you think the ice has been so much worse than expected up to this point? Keep up the good work on those repairs and good luck to you!

By Markski from Iowa on Wednesday, 31 March - 11:06 pm -0800

# Imporant QUESTIONs

Can you believe I am still at work since 6:30am it's now 4:56pm. Man what days....Wed's are long, longer, longest of the week for me. I guess in a way it's kinda like you feel some days. Well you are getting closer to your mid point! I have one depressing question really, but it's good to be prepared I guess, how will you cross the water as you near the pole, isn't it mostly water by the time you get there? IF so I guess that's why you have a sledge right? Pardon me if I don't know the answers to common questions. But you know some of us are just curious. Do you feel that you will meet your goal time, because don't they Borneo close May 1st? I hope you do, god I am praying for you. NOw one more question - As the days get longer, (light) does that mean you'll be up traveling longer? Okay one more really neat Question When it's night time and it's dark, is it really DARK? IS there light at all? Describe for me please.

# Arctic Ben

Hi Ben,

Being able to communicate with people from up there must be of some comfort. Sounds like another difficult day. But, each day has to be difficult in the conditions that you are enduring. Any concern yet about supplies? Are you about where you thought you would be at this time? Keep up the great effort. Our thoughts are with you every day.

By Bob on Wednesday, 31 March - 04:09 pm -0800

# It Won't Be Long

When you someday look back on this 2004 trip, it will seem like it happened so fast. Think about your past trips. Weren't they nice, seems like just yesterday? You will soon reach your final point - in good health - flying back to Great Britain - displaying the boot - TV appearances and rejoicing that you fully made the crossing! What will get you to that point is your positive attitude. To have a person like you in history is so invigorating to us. Thanks for contributing to our future and education. We appreciate your efforts. Have a nice day, the best parts are yet to come. Paul in Minnesota.

# Alone?

Ben,
Glad you had a better day today.
I read Hans' comments yesterday and then had a look at Wave's website and he does have a point! It seems a remarkable coincidence that you are always so close together and that you seem to choose the same days as rest days. I know rest days are often determined by the weather but Bettina and JG are in the same weather system as you and seem to travel on days that you and Wave both have as rest days. You also both did 9hrs and 7.5 miles yesterday! With your reported positions so close to each other since you set out you must surely have seen him or his trail at some time in the last three weeks which begs the question why have you not mentioned it? I imagine that seeing any sign of life out there, even just the trail of a fellow explorer, must be pretty exciting and certainly worthy of a mention in your daily dispatch.

By Josh on Wednesday, 31 March - 04:03 pm -0800

# Short and Sweet

WOW - talk about speechless! That's okay everyone's entitled to a short night. Well I like that picture. Have tons of work to do today, I guess surfing your site doesn't leave much time in the day to work! I don't know why the feds don't understand! I can't possibly search your site and look for updates and work at the same time, gee, isn't that too much to ask of me, don't you think!? Laughing so hard my insides hurt....

Best warm wishes Ben of all Bens.
Proud of you, you know.

Frustration

Frustration - Monday, 29th March 2004

The weather is going nuts again - it's incredibly windy, it's snowing and much of the day has been a whiteout. I decided to stay put and hope things improve - part of me says I should be out there, whatever the weather and part of me says I did the ...read more

Nine hours

Nine hours - Tuesday, 30th March 2004

A new record today - nine hours of skiing. The mileage wasn't spectacular, thanks to a dozen or so enormous pressure ridges, but I'm happy - a shade under seven nautical miles, my boot repair held together and I've just had beef stew for supper. ...read more

Speed demon - Thursday, 1st April 2004

The ice was very odd today - the best and worst yet. The best bits were a couple of huge pans (flat areas) and a gorgeous north pointing frozen lead. The worst was wall to wall rubble (I don't know if it's clear in the pic) with blocks the size of ...read more
