I think it's a very English trait that when disaster strikes, you can still sum it up with a cheesy pun.

My right boot felt a bit odd yesterday, but I thought nothing of it. When I came to put it on this morning, I noticed there was a lot of ice inside and poked my knife in to scrape it out. Then I spotted daylight, right where the insole should be. My boot had split in two.

I took one brief glance into the abyss of self-pity before the A-Team mode kicked in again. Armed with a red hot sail needle, wire, super glue, gaffer tape, a strip of metal hacksawed from my stove base and a couple of screws, I set to work.

The end result is functional rather than pretty, but it works. Just. This entire expedition, the sum of my ambition and the culmination of three years' hard graft now rests on the strength of a few feet of sticky tape. Crumbs.

It's not all doom and gloom - the ice conditions are improving and the weather today was glorious. And I discovered a couple of stowaways in my sledge. Someone had slipped two jelly babies into my vacuum packed breakfast. They didn't last long, sadly.

Today is dedicated to everyone at the London Speaker Bureau and to Chloe and Simon at Cunningham Management.

Hi to the 4th block science class in Livonia, NY State.

# Good thinking

Your fix of the boot may not be pretty indeed. But as long as it works who cares what it looks like, right?
Who's gonna look at it anyway? Keep putting one foot in front of the other, that's how trips are finished. God speed and protect you on this journy.

# Boots and Feet

Hi Ben

I came across this quote from Samuel Becket (Irish Novelist) that I thought was quite apt given the circumstances:

"There's man all over for you, blaming on his boots the fault of his feet."

WHICH ONE ARE YOU?

Regards

Marc

# Quote from IF 3/22

Ben You attitude of applying your trip to things in life is what people need to see. Will help to identify with you. What we think only those with courage enough to do what you are doing have, is really what each of us needs each day: the determination to go on in spite of obstacles. Still praying for you. Trav

# A unique and inspiring adventurer

Hi Ben
as part of the project team in Serco I have had many occasions in the last few weeks to talk about your adventure to different people. Each time I do it I find myself getting more and more passionate about your personal determination. Today I described this again to my Children's head teacher and felt really proud to be part of the team, if only in a small way. I am just about addicted to logging in each day and seeing how you've overcome your latest challenge. I have never met a true adventurer before and don't imagine I will again but it is an experience that has made me think about how I can make a difference to my work colleagues and my family. You really are a unique and inspiring person. See you in Canada, Marc !!!!!!!!!

By Marc at Serco on Tuesday, 23 March - 09:45 pm -0800

# Thank Goodness

This time we have to say thank-goodness you're better at sewing than our mum (it was dad we mentioned last time after you'd mended your IPAQ!) - we still have school shirts we can't wear cos mum hasn't sewn missing buttons on!!!
We went on a school outing today - and somebody had hidden Haribos in our rucksack - so we were happy too!
Last night we asked for a hot water bottle in bed - it had been several hours since we'dn read your dispatch - our mum just looked at us and asked why (it got down to 3degrees!) and said she knew one person who would probably need and ebjoy it!!!!!
Lots of luck and strength for your journey. we've used some of your photos for screen savers on our computers - they're COOL.

# Canada or Bust

Hi Christy,

You would have to drive most of the way, as I live in Pennsylvania. You could pick me up on the way!

By Bob on Tuesday, 23 March - 02:41 pm -0800

# Good for you...

Excellent repair job. 'Course you would have to be the resourceful type or you wouldn't be where you are in the first place. I pray that all your problems are repair-able! Take care of those feet!

By Karen Tynes on Tuesday, 23 March - 02:40 pm -0800

# HEY BOB,

You have a good idea, that would be a great adventure for the kids too, the only problem is I would want to drive! So the timing would have to be almost perfect!

By Christy on Tuesday, 23 March - 02:38 pm -0800

# Resourceful

Ben,

I think I'll throw out my tool kit and just buy myself some good tape. Good job on the repair. You continue to amaze me with your ability to overcome all of these obstacles. At least the weather seems to have been more cooperative for you today. I went for a walk yesterday afternoon- strong winds with wind chill in the 20 degree F range- I thought that was tough. I still can't comprehend what you must be going through! Best thoughts sent your way for continued progess and better luck with your equipment. From reading all of the messages sent to you, I bet there are a bunch of Ben fans who would love to go to Canada to greet you as you end your journey. You have become a celebrity!

By Bob on Tuesday, 23 March - 02:32 pm -0800

# Fix or Repair Daily....

Super Glue, amazing stuff, we use it in cold it cracks and breaks again. You should surely be the commerical for super glue. "-41 and holds" Well based on your stats you have only 840NM to go, and have you in was a feat trying to equal that into miles! I did it though, after some assistance! Not that far at all. I told the kids about winning and they were so excited they even asked since you were there if you could stop by and see Santa, I had to explain to them that you were on the other side of the North Pole, not his side, that was off limits to visitors, besides they are working. They can't wait to get mail from you, they thought you were mailing it last night! Boy to be a kid again. Life's little expectancies!!!!!! Well I am glad to see you are functioning and doing well. How is your girlfriend? On the second day you were missing her like crazy, how about now. Going insane to see her? I bet! We wish you well, and many warm wishes again. Prayers too. "now I lay me down to sleep I pray the lord my sould to keep, keep me blessed thrue da nite, keep me in his blessed sight, amen. My kids say that one. LOL\
