Dispatches: Readjustment - Wednesday, 2nd June 2004

I was hurtling around Richmond Park on my mountain bike a few days ago when my mobile (cell phone, for the American contingent) rang. It was Christian de Marliave of Cerpolex, the Paris-based firm that handled my expedition logistics from the Russian side this spring.

'On your BIKE?!', he exclaimed, 'I suppose your legs think they are still skiing, eh?'

I think he might be right. Anyway, 'how does it feel to be back?' has definitely superceded 'why?' as the question I'm most often asked. Neither are particularly easy to answer, but I'll have a stab at the first one...

More than ever, it feels like I've never even been away. Especially now the beard is a merely stubbly incarnation of its former self, and the tan lines have evened out. Trying to get to sleep in the dark is weird. Sitting down to answer the call of nature still feels luxurious. I'm slowly re-mastering the use of the knife and fork. On the whole, though, life is much the same as it always was. How have I changed? That's way more difficult. I think it's probably too early to tell - I'm still spending rather a lot time in cloud cuckoo land. I'll come back to that one...

The one thing that will be changing is this website. As you'll have surmised from the lack of recent updates, my day to day life is now rather less interesting than it was on the ice. (Made 0.3 nautical miles today and reached the coffee shop by 1530UTC. Encountered nasty area of puddles, but managed to skirt around. No sign of polar bear activity.) This site (sercotransarctic.com) will change to being a static showcase for the expedition, with some decent resolution photos, a bit of video, and a few other things we're working on. My old site (bensaunders.com) will be resurrected as a semi-regularly updated blog, for the terminally addicted readers who fancy reading about the build-up to the next expedition...

# He's back!

Hi Ben,

Good to hear from you again- there had been a bit of a void in my daily routine the last couple of weeks. I look forward to being able to follow along as you make plans for your next adventure- Enjoy that cup of Coffee- you've earned it!

# Hopelessly addicted to you...

I'm so glad you've reappeared!

I'm sure glad that you've let us know not only that all is well, but that we haven't heard the last of you either.

I so look forward to your next adventure and your so well written dispatches!

# Um...

Now, about that broken boot you're going to auction off.... Ben? BEN?!?!?! Don't think I'm about to forget. I've been involved in two such previous auctions, including their conception and follow-through - famous Olympic ice-skates to be specific. So, I've got the experience. All I would need from you is your cause or benefit of choice (some anti-global-warming organization perhaps?), the location and time of the auction (you'd have to be present, of course).... and the minor detail of.... DAS BOOT!!!!!

So, how 'bout it, Ben? Hm? Or are you still too attached to the little trouble-maker?

Write me! ( Moki@cloud9.net )

# Jenga.

Remember that game, Jenga? Life sometimes seems like that, moving blocks from the bottom to the top. Eventually things fall down yet you managed to inspire so many with your trek. Good job Ben, Bravo Zulu.

# Nice to "see" you off the ice!

Hi Ben! Great to read your latest post, and know that you're getting by, even if you're still adjusting to being back home. If you're lucky, you'll NEVER adjust completely!

Take care and watch those leads when your biking. :)

# excellent...

post when you bring it online....
have enjoyed your expidition....look forward to the next...don't know what your first meal on solid ground was..but we were talking about that...like.."what would you have"...after three months on the ice with no home cookin...well i guess it would be some of momma's home baked ham, collard greens, fresh mashed potatoes-n-gravey, some kinda pea or bean, corn bread and banana pudding...washed down by a generous glass of sweet tea....(yes we yanks like it cold and sweet)...
there were several other suggestions...but as long as you enjoyed it..that was all that mattered...
take care

# HI BEN

Nice to see a new pic! Feeling healthy huh!? Great for you. Did you run across the blue mail box yet? (smile) (wink) The kids ask from time to time about the photos! Are you planning another type of expedition?

# Thank God!

I knew it would be today...I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!! I am ELATED to know that I can catch more blog on bensaunders.com. I enjoy your wit, sense of humor, and you're writing style. I thoroughly enjoyed the expedition...that experience was wonderful...and I look forward to the next, but I really have become an addict of your style. I will be checking in there, then. I think it's a talent not many have and it's a rare treat to read and appreciate what is written, especially when you share the same sense of humor! I agree with Helen...the camaraderie has been great and I hope I have the opportunity to chat with you, Helen and others sooner rather than later! By the way, what kind of bike are you riding? When will the book be out? Will you do a speaking tour in support of the book? Will the photos on the site be larger than the ones sent via dispatch? Inquiring minds want to know!

It's been a wonderful adventure and one that has changed my life Ben. Thank you, and CATCH YOU ON YOUR NEXT EXPEDITION! :-D

Nikki

p.s. Looks nice and toasty where you are!

# Thanks Ben!

Great to have another dispatch - was getting bored with your Ottawa photo - nice though it was! Tony's cousins from Ottawa are coming to see us next week so there will be much to talk about. Hi to all the other terminally committed sercosurfers. Hope our paths will cross again with the next expedition too.....The camaraderie has been great. Bye for now! Helen

Terra Firma!

Terra Firma! - Saturday, 15th May 2004

For the first time in ten weeks, I'm on dry land. My runway was good enough, and Kenn Borek Air's Troy, Monica and Dave did a fantastic job in getting me back to Resolute Bay in northern Canada. I'm in a hurry as I have to make a flight to Ottawa ...read more

Home sweet home

Home sweet home - Tuesday, 18th May 2004

Well, it wasn't just unusually warm in the high arctic. Ottawa was glorious. The welcome, the weather, the people, the tulips. I had a manic day of interviews with the Canadian press on Sunday (that's me on the front page of Monday's Ottawa ...read more
