I think it was the great Eddy Mercx (5 times Tour de France winner) that said if you kept hitting a stone with a hammer, you ended up with particles of metal in the stone and particles of stone in the hammer, and that the same happened with him and his bike - it was part human and he was part bicycle. What am I on about? One of my mp3 players has gone slightly haywire and what used to be 'random shuffle' mode is showing worrying signs of telepathy - it seems to be able to read my moods and respond with appropriate tunes.

Just as today seemed to be turning into a repeat of yesterday (atrocious ice and weather conditions) it played Survivor's The Eye of the Tiger, a tune I didn't even know was on there.

I broke into a smile. I skied a touch faster. I even threw in a little shadow boxing now and then (although thanks to the whiteout, I had no shadow). As you can see from the photo, the ice is still really bad and I had to fight for the mileage again today, but I was way, way happier doing it.

Today's dedication is to Tete and Pablo, along with special happy birthday wishes to Stevie (sorry it's a couple of days late) - I hope you didn't hit the champagne too hard this time!!

# Love of suffering elements...

...is what Eddy Merckx is about, along with Lance Armstrong, and Ben Saunders! There is an element in one's personality that drives them to excel while suffering (seriously)...that's why you're all successful at what you do. You have to be able to suffer elements in a particular way...actually LIKE it. I think that's what I have. My friends think I'm nuts about half the things I want to do...they all tell me, "JEEZ...you must LIKE to suffer..." :-) Keeps us on the edge! Press on, Ben...happy to read you're in a better frame of mind today! -- Nikki

# Mood Player 3

Hi, Ben
Sounds like you have an unconscious connection with your mood player. Your photograph dramatically conveyed the meaning of rubble - insidious and fatiguing. In the meantime, hope you are still wiggling those toes, and resting between encampments.
Best,
-Scot

# I see resupply is only a few days away

I in no way questioning the monumental task you are undertaking but I thought that when I first learned of your trip that it was "unsupported". Perhaps my friend misread something on your site. Did he just misunderstand this or did something change? I was absolutely astounded to think that there would be no supply drops--this makes much more sense.

# That's a hell of a photo!

To be able to set up the camera on self-timer then jump into the broken ice until only the hat is showing.
True grit Ben, I stand in awe......

Sorry to have been away a couple of days, people keep telling me to slow down and take things gradually. I keep ploughing on until I have to keel over for a couple of days.
That was the last couple.....

Enough coupling for one day!

Glad to see your rise in spirits is as good as mine, back to work then. Let's show the buggers what can be done.

# All power to you!

I've been keeping up with your progress for the past few weeks for a project at school and I've got to hand it to you-I would have gone home when my boots broke!! I love reading how your days go and I admire how you are still going to complete this journey after all that's happened to you!! Keep up the good work!! I'll be praying for a safe return hopefully by the end of this year! Good luck on your travels!!

# Hey Ben

Hi,
So, how is it down there? Its funny that you've been there since February or March seeing snow every day, and me I never seen snow in my life. We are learning about you in our yearbook class and weve made a nick name for you, its "Beny." In my opinion, I think you are crazy for doing this, but atleast you doing something thats important to you. Your a true example, you show that anything is possible and that if you put your mind to it can be accomplished. Well i'll let you go.
Bye

# Hey Mr.Arctic!

I think it is really admirable that you are going to the arctic for as long as your are. I bet it is really cold there. Colder than here anyway! I live in Texas, and it is about 74 degrees F. My favorite message that you have left is the one about not wanting to come home and have to worry about what clothes to wear. I think the world would be a better place if everyone wouldn't worry about "keeping up with the Jones". Whrn you said you only have 1 set of clothes, does that mean you only have 1 pair of underwear, too? Do you get cold in the middle of the night, and is the dry/wet suit comfortable? I hope you keep having "fun" and you don't have anymore boot troubles! Good luck with your long trek, and may God bless you!!
Love Always, Tiffany

# Hope your days improve!!!

Hi! I have been reading about you for a couple of weeks now due to a school assignment given by my computer applications teacher. I have to say that you have inspired me to branch out and do my own thing. So keep up the good work because I know there are more people out there like me. Just keep in mind that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Hope you have the time to write me! If not that's o.k. just know I'm thinking of you. If this offends you I'm sorry but I'll be praying for you!!! Bye! Have a great day!!!

# WAVE

OH my gosh is WAVE going to be okay? I can't believe it, I feel so bad for him, now how are you going to reach Borneo befre 4/29?

# Survivor

What really keeps us going and keeps one optimistic? Do you really know? Is it our mind conqering all odds? Is it the love of the sport? Is it our sub conscious self? Well whatever it is, when yours falls a little behind you always seem to bring it back, you shed those tears, and express the words and keep it going. You seem like a care free spirit type of person, outgoing and energetic, conscious and a real thinker. Idealistic, charming. How could we not support you and stand behind what you are doing? Best to Val and Moms. I if we could meet you, you would be definitly someone we would love to know.

Keep up the pressing work and optimistic thoughts, we are still behind you. Are you getting new boots on resupply!

Christy and kids I still haven't read a dedication to yourself.

By Christy on Thursday, 22 April - 06:29 pm -0700

# Stick and Move

Ben, this is my first messsage to you although I have been checking on you for around a month now, ever since my friend told me about your quest. I am a singer/songwriter here in Chicago, IL and hearing about the "Eye of the Tiger" making you smile dispite the "atrocious ice and weather conditions" is the quintessential reason creating music is my life. l am truley invious of your trek. What a feet! I have to tell you that your vision, determination and perseverance have inspirited me to write a song with you in mind.
Stay positive, keep your thoughts on the goal and keeping pushing....:)
When you get back and settled and want to hear the song go to www.56hoperd.com send me a message and I will send it to you.
Positivity,
Stephen

# Shadow boxing, huh?

Glad to see your spirits are up today. I like the idea of shadow boxing to 'Eye of the Tiger'. I can almost see Rocky running along, shadow boxing as well. Be careful when the shadow starts hitting back; you know you have reached the limit one can spend with oneself! Steady as she goes, mate.

# On rocky ground..

".....
Went the distance
Now I'm back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive",

Sound like anyone we know?

Let me know how you get on with the high notes...mind you, noone will mind even if you sond like a strangled cat...

(sorry cat fans...)

Keep on rocking in the free world

# What a mess!

Want me to come up there and clean up all that rubble?

Good to read that you've conquered the mood of yesterday and are your usual optimistic self today. No matter what happens Ben, you are a survivor. You consistently prove your strength of character, over and over again.

Even though I don't "know" you, I'm so very proud of you.

Take care - keep the faith - press on.

By Gwen on Thursday, 22 April - 05:08 pm -0700

Cracking up

Cracking up - Tuesday, 20th April 2004

It was a beautiful day again today, but I noticed something unusual as I set off this morning. I have a ribbon taped to a ski pole that shows the direction of the wind (useful for navigating if I can't see the sun). For weeks now, it's been ...read more

From bad to worse - Wednesday, 21st April 2004

I think the Arctic wanted to show me who's really the boss today. It was certainly the worst day of the expedition and quite possibly the toughest of my entire life. The large lead I camped near last night hadn't frozen (a bad sign) and worse ...read more

Snowed in - Friday, 23rd April 2004

The weather is going beserk. I hardly slept last night as it was so windy and I woke up to find my tent and sledge half buried in drifting snow. It's still a complete whiteout, and when I staggered a few paces away to answer the call of nature this ...read more

Visitors! - Saturday, 24th April 2004
