I can vaguely remember a cartoon poster on my bedroom wall when I was very young - a picture of a child holding an empty cone and a dog licking at a big dollop of ice cream on the ground. That was the caption - 'these things are sent to try us'.

What on earth's this got to do with today? 85 degrees, that's what. For days I've been working like mad to reach 85 degrees north, where according to fellow adventurers, polar experts and satellite images, the ice would really start to improve. And instead I'm greeted with the worst ice I've seen in ages and the mother of all leads that took nearly two hours to negotiate. Aarrgh!

Just when I was starting to feel really low, I remembered DB and a young South African guy I met last summer, Victor Vermeulen. Vic is one of the most genuinely inspirational people I've met. He's also paralysed from the neck down. My mood changed immediately - what do I really know about challenge and frustration? If you're reading this, Vic, today is dedicated to you.

A big hi also to Scot, to my elder namesake (thanks for the easter message!) and to everyone at Dane's Hill School.

# Hi

Hello I'm soooo stupid!

By Christy on Tuesday, 13 April - 05:54 pm -0700

# you've made great progress!

We went on holiday 27th March and only had one chance to see where you were - mending boots and not going far! .
We really feared that you might give up with all the bad things that were happening so we are really really pleased, we even jumped into the air when we logged on and saw that you had made such great progress while we were on holiday. Whilw we were complaining to our mum for putting this horrible, slithery white stuff all over us to stop us getting sunburnt you were working so hard!!!!! We did think of you a lot and are so pleased that you just had a couple of days with such good nms!!!! (not to be confused with the m&ms we like to eat!)

p.s. Alex won a white Easter Bunny in an easter egg hunt on the last day of the holiday - he's called it Ben the Explorer!!!!!!! - He's just done a supported expedition of 4100miles in less than a day.
Hey, you've only got just over 700nms left. Looking forward to more and more miles under your skis - we are pushing for you!

# Defined

I read somewhere that what doesn't kill us, defines us. Imagine the character you will be once this is over!! Regards.

# Snowyowl

Well, I guess that given the terrible ice conditions, it must be nice to have all that extra daylight to travel by. exactly how much sun (or darkness) are you experiencing? Lace 'em up and chin up, mate, anything worth doing is worth the extra trials of doing it.

# Man & Sled

Hi, Ben
Today's photograph, reminds me of 'one day at a time', that we are given no more than we can handle, for today. Please, wiggle those toes, and my deepest appreciation to you, the force is with Jedi Ben.
Sincerely,
Scot

# So any time your gettin' low

Ben: Remember this song from an old television sitcom show years ago. . .

"Just what makes that little old ant
Think he'll move that rubber tree plant
Anyone knows an ant, can't
Move a rubber tree plant

But he's got high hopes, he's got high hopes
He's got high apple pie, in the sky hopes

So any time your gettin' low
'stead of lettin' go
Just remember that ant
Oops there goes another rubber tree plant."
//////////
Tomorrow I'll be thinking of you skiing on those pans and I'll think. . . there goes Ben
skiing another mile, and knowing that just like that little ant. . .there is no can't

Can Do Ben!

Texas

# You're amazing, and don't you forget it

Today's photo is incredible. I can't imagine having to negotiate the rubble alone, let alone with your sledge too. Despite all the hinderences, you still managed to travel over 11 nm, which is more then you were managing the first 2-3 weeks.

You're doing just great, Ben. When you get tired and discourged, just remember...if it was easy, there would be no point in what you're doing!

Get some rest tonight and press on tomorrow, which I hope is a "flatter" day for you.

By Gwen on Monday, 12 April - 06:53 pm -0700

# The Laws of the Universe

If you couldn't do it, it wouldn't be presented to you...all that much more reason to NOT be intimidated by it. I'm not saying take it for granted and try to conquer it...you must respect your environment...I'm sure you'll agree. You made it past those obstacles and that's something to celebrate and be proud of as you get closer and closer to 86... Peace and comfort tonight and a productive day tomorrow! Press on, Ben! -- Nikki :-D

By Nikki on Monday, 12 April - 06:14 pm -0700

# You're Walking on Water.

Hard as it may seem... miracles are just the profit of un-tapped talents and un-expected gifts.

By Silus Grok on Monday, 12 April - 05:25 pm -0700

# Obstacles and Goals

Hi Ben,

I can't help but think that, when you reach Canada and look back at all that you endured to reach your goal, that your accomplishment will mean that much more because of the obstacles that you had to overcome. We tend to learn more about ourselves when challenged. You always seem to have this ability to pick yourself up and look beyond the obstacles. I hope the next few days provide ideal conditions for lots of mileage.

By Bob on Monday, 12 April - 05:00 pm -0700

# From small acorns...

Ben,
Just wanted to say a quick hello from an old Canterbury friend.I've been keeping an eye on your progress and can hardly believe that the beer-drinking lad I knew could go so far...except that of course some people really are born to greatness and you have undoubtedly proved that you are one of them.
And you may well find inspiration from the people that you have met in your life since I knew you, but in following your dreams you serve as such an inspiration both to me and also to all of these people all over the world that you have never even met.
Take care Ben, and I know a great publisher if you want a deal when you get back!!

# Go on lad!

Hopefully everything will look better soon. Just don't let a tiny wee bit of snow and ice dishearten you ;) You are doing a great job.

By Iria on Monday, 12 April - 04:50 pm -0700

# Never Never Give up

In trying times I also remember a drawing of a Frog who's being eaten by a pelican and the frog has is arms extending out from the bill of the pelican wrapped arounds it's neck so it can't swallow him. The caption: "Never, Never, Ever Give up"

By Doug on Monday, 12 April - 04:30 pm -0700

# GOOD LUCK

THE CLOUDS ARE MOST STRONG, BUT YOUR SUNSHINE WILL COME THRU. HAVE FAITH IN GOD, AND ALL THE ICE WILL BE SMOOTH.
I HAVE ENJOYED KEEPING UP WITH YOUR EXPEDITION. I KNOW YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL.
GOOD LUCK.

By JOAN on Monday, 12 April - 04:29 pm -0700

# Inspire us

You know sometimes lifes little trials and tribulations are meant for us to work through, however I think you are inspirational also, so Vic is not alone. We cope with what we have and the tools we use are the ones we have gained along the way. For every trying time you have gained a tool..... You too will be fine and will do this. You have proved every day! To your self and us. Take care, I told you on the 4th day out on the ice, you'd make it! Look - you have! Take care Ben, talk tomorrow. The map is looking GREAT! When I first started watching you it was near the land, look at it now......

Prayers,
Christy

That sinking feeling

That sinking feeling - Friday, 9th April 2004

I woke up to a beautiful sunny day, with only a slight headwind to complain about. After climbing over a bit of rubble, I spotted a massive pan - perfect conditions at last! It didn't last long - after 15 mins came the first lead, but the ice was ...read more

Easter Sunday - Sunday, 11th April 2004

Polar safari - Tuesday, 13th April 2004

It was really warm today. According to Tony, who receives the temp. along with my position from a small satellite beacon in my sledge, it was -14 degrees C. It felt even warmer - the sun was blazing and there wasn't a breath of wind. It probably ...read more

Captain caveman - Wednesday, 14th April 2004

Up here I lead an incredibly simple existence, something I reflected upon this evening as I put my tent up and found a particularly nice patch of snow to dig up and melt for drinking water. As I filled up my bag with blocks of snow, I felt a ...read more
