The ice was very odd today - the best and worst yet. The best bits were a couple of huge pans (flat areas) and a gorgeous north pointing frozen lead. The worst was wall to wall rubble (I don't know if it's clear in the pic) with blocks the size of cars forced up at crazy angles and gaping cracks you could lose a telegraph pole in. Before today, I'd never encountered ice that I simply couldn't get through - 'there's always a way' is my pack ice mantra. But today, I had to reverse out of a complete dead end. Towering walls of rubble ice and drifted snow deep enough to sink thigh deep with no skis on. Incredible.

Anyhow, the good news: when the ice allowed, I really motored and managed 8 nautical miles - an expedition record. The bad news? I feel like I've been beaten up and worse still, I'm suffering from what could politely be described as nappy rash. Ah, the glamour of polar adventure...

Today is dedicated to Robert Smith at Serco. I wouldn't be here without him and as a manager and leader, he has been a pleasure and an inspiration to work with. Thanks Robert (it sounds like last night was a success as well!)

# Inspirational!

Dear Ben, Iread your report everyday from my desk at work and am transported a million miles away into an unknown world of adventure, endurance and the truly incredible. Is it possible for anyone to become an explorer or do you think it's a unique intrinsic quality one is born with?
Good luck with the remainder of your trip -you're a real inspiration!

# Skiing - it's the only way to travel

Hi Ben

Well, I thought I'd done some pretty amusing things in my time [including climbing Mont Blanc, descending the world's 2nd deepest pothole, walking the Pennine Way and cycling Land's End to John o'Groats (return)] but you're in a different league. I'd happily lend you my bicycle but I need it for getting to work. Besides, I know from experience that skiing beats all other modes of travel.

Are you having fun? If so, stick with it. If not, it's time you did, so get on those skis and have some. I hope we can meet some time but you're going to have to come here; I refuse to join you up there [mainly because you want to be solo].

Regards

# Easter Magic

Hi Ben
This is our last day at school before Easter. So we won't all be able to read your messages for 2 weeks.
Good luck, hope you have a safe journey. We wonder if anyone has tucked an Easter egg in you food supplies? If you meet any polar bears don't let them eat your Easter egg!!
And watch out for the North Pole Easter Bunny.
Bye for now

# Speed matters!

Hi Ben, glad to see that not having a car hasn't changed your attitude.
Sorry not to have left a message for a couple of days, normal problems of life.
Work is coming on with my boat, with a bit of luck it should be finished before your trip is over. How do I get to Canada? West coast of Scotland - Iceland - Greenland then find a pub. Got any cash on you for a pint?
Watch out for the speed cameras......

# WOW

Hi Ben
I am from Serco D&A in Plymouth and have only recently become aware of your challenge. I am amazed at your commitment, courage and ability to read a compass! Last year myself and six other girls decided to join the Navy on a trek across Dartmoor on a 5mile easy route. Seven hours later they had sent out a search party for us, we had gone in the opposite direction to start, realised our error one hour later, after adjusting our direction we then missed a turning and ended up at Burrator. We all fell down ditches, into streams and were finally escorted back to base (the Plume and Feather Pub at Princetown) with gorse bushes in our hair, wet feet and mud covered. We were the last team and got fair bit of ribbing over the incident!! Keep with it, I will definately keep track of your progress and wish you lots of luck. Stevie xx

# Excellent Job Today

Way to stick to it today Ben. Even with the damn Ice. Eight miles is excellent. On top of that you had to get out of the rubble/ice/snow dead end.

I'm assuming Nappy Rash is somewhere delicate, so I'm not going to ask. When I was in the Army; for hot spots on feet, ankles, heels, etc. we would tape a layer of duct tape (100 MPH Tape) over the sore spot. Worked great as long as it's taken care of before you blister and realize it's only a temporary fix.

Duct tape works great on worts to, believe it or not. Just wrap some tightly over and leave for 3-4 days, remove and re-apply, do this 4-5 times and it'll cure the wart. Better than any medical cure. You know, LOL just in case you catch any arctic worts.

Gut it out. We expect 8 1/2 NM tomorrow. LOL

Hi, Ben
Stellar-terrific work today, indeed, motoring through car-sized rubble, dude! Wanted to share this with you -

# Cheers!

Ben,

It's so good to hear that you had such a good day and thanks so much for your describing the conditions - it helps "us" experience the adventure with you.

Can't help but wonder how your supplies are holding up (food, etc.) and you didn't mention the boot repair so I'm assuming that all is well...

Hope you have another great day tomorrow - ski on!

We are all still with you!

# Commitment

HI Ben

Anything in life worth getting is something worth giving total commitment to. We all do it but clearly not to the extremes you test yourself. Our comitment to your goals in Serco is total and we are all pulling for you everyday. I think you now need to make that rash decision and go for the underwear change you planned. I checked the project schedule and we can accomodate the lost time for an extra pit stop change.

It has been a great experience so far working with you , Tony and the team. Tony should be congratulated also on being a great project manager and friend to you.

Finally, it is a shame that the internet allows for people to be critical and annonymous. These people should be brave enough to show themselves.

Keep pushing on.

Regards

Marc

# Any polar bear?

Hi Ben, it's me Giulia from Italy! I'm going to tell all my school friends about your expedition and show them how to follow it on the Web. So they can get to know you, too. I know you can make it! Just hold on! Don't play jokes on any polar bear!!!! Otherwise....... ! Have you seen any? I like them a lot but I prefer horses.
Love, Giulia xxx

# Wishes for many pans. . .

. . .seems to be working, so here I go, wishing you many more pans.

You are doing extreemly well Ben, we are all so proud of you; wow, such a strange, unpredictable day.

With the experience you are getting, I'll bet you could write a variety of books from true story to scary ones. Do you have some writing equipment so you can be creative and explicit in your descriptions and feelings? That way you will bring back that point of each intense feeling from your memory for writing material? Perhaps, even just a few KEY words with a date?

Anyway, looks like the intense vision for many pans is working. . .let’s all work together and visualize those pans.

# Need for Speed or Cheese

Hi Ben,

Pardon the comparison, but your story today made me picture the mouse in the maze that has to keep trying to find the correct path to the cheese! Just keep thinking- Canada is your cheese. (although the beer is good too!)

# Happy April Fool's Day!!

Sounds like another adventurous day at the office! Glad you made it through that horrendous rubble to find you kicked 8 nm!! Right on, my man! Way to go! Your mantra obviously holds true...keep up your great spirits!

With you every single day,

Nikki

# Pride and committment

The commitment you have shown and the challenges you set for yourself are inspirational. The human sprirt shall suceed, just like it did during the recovery of 9/11. I am a member of the NYPD and our prayers and hearts are with you.

By Lou V. on Thursday, 1 April - 07:12 pm -0800

# An Inspiration for us all

Ben, You are doing things that most of us could only dream of, much less actually have the will and strength to do. Most of us watching for your daily messages know that you have other things to contend with than answering every question that comes in ~ and the majority are just happy to read your newest dispatch! Keep your spirits high, feet dry, and control of the nappy rash :) ! Good Luck ~ God Speed ~ and Be Safe

By Michelle from Va. Beach, VA on Thursday, 1 April - 06:03 pm -0800

# Incredible

My buddy told me about this site and I am blown away by your spirit. Keep on pushing out the miles and you will get to Canada. I believe in you!

By Expedition Team on Thursday, 1 April - 05:50 pm -0800

# You did find a way

I am addicted a bit to your adventure. You said today you had to back track a bit to get out of a dead end and this was counter to your pack mantra - 'there's always a way'. I think you succeeded in staying true to your mantra. There was a way and you accepted it and did it.
Trouble comes when there is a refusal to accept the 'way' because it doesn't seem to fit what we want.
I hope you are successful in your adventure.

By John Smiley on Thursday, 1 April - 05:47 pm -0800

# Go for it

I think you're really great, keep on pushing forward, you know you are the Man!

By Janey on Thursday, 1 April - 05:46 pm -0800

# I had to laugh

when I read about your "nappy rash." That is too funny, although I'm sure it's not funny to you. Here you are in such a dangerous situation and you have that annoying problem. Who would think?!

As for the people who post here asking questions, it's not at all realistic to expect Ben to answer all of them. He's rather busy trying to survive in the Arctic and accomplish what hasn't yet been accomplished by a single soul. We should consider ourselves fortunate that he is able to post a daily message, which lets us know he's okay, and that's what's most important.

By Gwen on Thursday, 1 April - 05:46 pm -0800

# Answers

Ben,
There have been a lot of questions on this site about your plans, how much food and fuel you have, whether you are still planning to go unsupported, whether you are travelling with Wave etc. These are material issues which have a profound impact on what you are doing or claiming you are doing and it is dissappointing that you have not answered these questions.
What is the situation?
